A few times a year, a text message comes through that Sarah is waiting for.
It’s asking her to proofread the next book of either AJ McDine (pictured left) or AJ Wills (on the right!) – former newspaper colleagues turned full-time writers.
A few weeks ago, it was Adrian’s turn to ask her (AJ Wills) and so she was sent Nothing Left to Lose to proofread.
It’s a slow process – every word is read slowly and carefully…this isn’t a job to do in a rush! She also looks for continuity, a seamless plot and any other errors or corrections that need to be done.
She said: “These are very old friends who I am in total awe of, writing their own books! It’s a dream of mine…one day! But until then, I am more than happy to get a first look at their books and proofread to get them ready for publication.
“It’s very hard to be looking for error in good friends’ work but that’s what they want me to do, so that what goes to print is absolutely clean copy, ready for the readers to enjoy, mistake-free.
“I usually have a week to proof the books, so I do about two hours a day, going very slow, taking notes on absolutely everything and sending it over to them for review.
“The trouble is, their books are so good, that I have to stop myself from racing through them as a normal reader!
“Some of my feedback is straight corrections and others are suggestions – to expand a sentence, cut it back, re-arrange it or ask for clarity on something.
